about

“1981 was the year I stood my ground and said enough is enough and I have to do things my own way. My Dad had lots of good sides but at that time was developing (under a lot of pressure to be fair) problems associated with heavy drinking. I left my job (that was just plain miserable, wrong for me) and hitched off to Cardiff to see a gig (Alan Holdsworth) . I had no tent, (it rained ALL weekend!) and despite having practically no food and sleeping in a sheet of plastic the experience felt 'life changing' and was.  The sun came out on the morning after the gig (paid for a kind hearted ‘hippy who saw I had no money. I always thank him for that. I then hitched a massive lift to not far from where I was living. The lorry driver who picked me up could see I was struggling and bought me a me at a service station.  When things are down really cool people often appear, I find!
I had already moved away from home (to Eastbourne) 6 months earlier but decided to stay well clear of family pressures for a while. After that, strangely enough, bit by bit things fell into place.  I got a girlfriend, read some great books and eventually got a job in a music shop, much more my thing.
I’m not going to get on my high horse too much here about other people's weaknesses as later I became a heavy 'drinker' in the 90’s (with band 70 Gwen Party.) but the moral of the story for me is never play a ‘bit part’ in someone else's ‘movie’. when you can live your own life.  ‘81 West Journey Man’ nails that moment I moved forward that weekend in Cardiff, forever a life defining moment for me.  Of course, I made my own mistakes later but they were 'my' mistakes to make and I don’t regret one second of that spring.  The years ahead were mostly sober and very positive”.
